heather m Author Heather Manley, N.D. I have always been passionate about healthy foods and exercising. Growing up in Toronto, Canada I would exhaust my allowance at the health food store and write school papers on spices and herbs. It was no wonder I found myself studying biology at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I loved animals as well so I initially focused on wildlife conservation and animal biology, however, with some exposure to naturopathic medicine, this health care philosophy rang true for me. I switched to pre-med and I graduated in 1993. I earned my doctorate at the from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon before moving with my family to Hawaii where I became licensed and continue to practice today. Everything I learned in medschool came into fruition when my children were born. I realized the importance of teaching them, by example, about healthy food and lifestyle. Telling them what to eat was not enough, so I created and wrote educational adventure stories that explain the physiological systems in the body. Not only did my kids love the engaging and interactive stories but so did their friends. I love seeing kids have fun learning to understand their bodies and how food helps them run faster and be smarter. My focus is on preventative health. I am passionate about encouraging families to seek the value of a simple lifestyle and offering tools to assist them at being proactive and confident in their daily living. I am constantly inspired seeing people make positive changes in their lives. With my website, I am excited to reach more families in a way that will manifest healthy living.

This weeks question:

Q: What is your preferred reading format? Hardcover, eBooks, paperback etc?

I just bought a Nook and at first I absolutely hated it. Everyone is correct when they say the feel of the physical book in your hand is better than having a light shine in your face. I get it peeps, it's not the same. Once I started forcing myself to use it, I got used to the idea. Key notes:

Awesome points:

1. I have 297 books on my Nook and aren't getting dusty on my shelf
2. They're way cheaper... I swear I've saved hundreds of dollars. Hardcover = $20, eBook = $5.99
3. You can read in the dark
4. I can look up a word right then and there... just two taps on the screen. I used to have a computer near me and google them.
5. You also have google translater that's easily accessible. It's needed for books like Perfect Chemistry. (I don't know any Spanish)
6. You can bookmark anything you want so tons of paper won't stick out of your book.
7. I can check my Facebook, email, twitter, blog, ANYTHING if I forget something in the middle of a book.
8. The newer Nooks can also support Kindle... so it's two formats in one.
9. I can easily find sentences through out the book so it's faster to find my favorite scene and re-read it (I do this all the time).

Downsides:

1. I have to charge it all the time or it will die on me.
2. If it's low battery then you can't read it and have to wait. (it's limited time reading)
3. The library doesn't have a huge library of eBooks if I want to rent it instead of buying.

That's really it. I support eBooks WAY more than paperbacks and hardcovers.

In Times of Trouble
by Yolonda Tonette Sanders

About The Author:

Yolonda Tonette Sanders took a leap of faith in 2004 when she resigned from her job with the State of Ohio after only three and a half years to focus more on writing. It was a leap that she has never regretted. In 2005, her debut novel, Soul Matters, was published by Walk Worthy Press and Time Warner (now Hachette Book Group). In 2008, her second book, Secrets of a Sinner, was published by Harlequin/Kimani Press. That same year Yolonda started Yo Productions, LLC, a Christian based literary services and theatrical entertainment company, which she used to launch and create her first stage production. The theatrical version of Soul Matters debuted successfully in September 2009 at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Since then, Strebor Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, is planning to release four of Yolonda’s titles by April 2015. Currently, Yolonda resides in Columbus, Ohio and is the loving wife of David, proud mother of Tre and Tia, and joyful caregiver of her mother, Wilene.

Genre: Christian | Contemporary | Inspirational
Publisher: Simon and Schuster/Strebor Books
Release Date: April 23, 2013

Book Description:

Divorced, single mother Lisa Hampton is grateful for a fresh start after a humiliating scandal forced her to relocate from Maryland to Ohio. Her biggest issue nowadays is dealing with her rebellious teenage daughter, Chanelle, who is one smart comment away from being toothless!

Other than the stress of dealing with Chanelle, life is perfect. Lisa has a new beau and a steady job that allows her the opportunity to rub shoulders with very wealthy and influential people. She is best friends with Isaac and Olivia Scott, an extremely rich and powerful couple.

When Chanelle accuses the Scotts’ son of rape, Lisa learns how quickly her friends become enemies as Olivia and Isaac use their wealth and power to manipulate justice. The Scotts prove that they are willing to go to extreme lengths to protect their son, even if it means destroying both Lisa and Chanelle in the process.

Excerpt

Hearing the sound of her mother's footsteps descending the hardwood stairs, Lisa leaned back on the sofa so as not to appear overly anxious.
"Chanelle still hasn’t made it home?” Her mother’s wire-framed glasses rested at the tip of her nose while a large green robe concealed her body.
  "Nope. . ."
  "Did you call Jareeka’s?”
“Yes; her father said that she and her mother are away for the weekend.” She felt herself tensing with every word.
“What about RJ? Have you called him?”
“He hasn’t seen her either.”
“Well, don’t come down too hard on her. Maybe she didn't know Jareeka was out of town and when she found out, she decided to hang with one of her other friends instead. Now she should’ve at least called and told you, but she was probably so happy to get out the house that she forgot. Poor thing; it seems like she’s always on punishment. Sometimes I think you’re too hard on that girl. I don't want to meddle—"
"Then please don't," the thirty-eight-year-old interjected in the most respectful tone that she could conjure up with a clenched jaw.
"All right. I'll keep my opinion to myself, but I was merely going to say that you may want to consider extending Chanelle's curfew. She’s practically an adult and it’s time you start treating her like one. Maybe then you’d be less likely to run into this problem."
An electrifying jolt shot through Lisa’s body. The way she disciplined Chanelle had become a constant point of contention between her and her mother. Thank goodness Hattie would soon be moving into her own apartment! Lisa could not wait!
“That makes absolutely no sense!” she fired back. “What she is, is irresponsible. Why should I reward her for not being able to honor her curfew? And anyhow, she wouldn’t have been on punishment recently had she not been so smart at the mouth.”
“I wonder where she got it from . . .” her mother replied cynically, quickly disappearing into the kitchen and returning moments later. “Good night."
"The same to you,” Lisa replied, continuing to stew as the clock read 1:21 a.m. The only other noise she heard was the emptying of the automatic ice machine until ten minutes or so later when a car pulled into the driveway. Lisa’s heart began racing when she saw flashing blue and red lights from the window. It wasn’t her car as she had thought, but a police cruiser. A gut-wrenching fear fell over her. Had something horrible happened to Chanelle? She felt guilty about being so angry and the missed curfew was now a minor issue compared to the concern that her baby might be lying in the hospital somewhere. Lisa was horrified by the unlimited possibilities of things that could’ve happened to her daughter. The pit of her stomach knotted as she sprang from the couch and raced to the front door.

Summary:

Ten years ago, Emily Miller went missing when she was only five years old. Everyone in town thought she had either drowned in the lake near her house, or had been kidnapped. Some even whispered that her father, Frank Miller was responsible.

No one suspected the old boathouse behind the Miller property, except Emily’s father. Frank Miller knew what had happened to his little girl. He knew the boathouse had her.

Ten years later, thirteen-year-old George Morgan wanders into the same boathouse and discovers a magical secret. At first he’s thrilled. He reveals his secret to his fifteen-year-old brother Eddie, thinking it will bring them closer together. After all, George and Eddie used to be best friends, before they moved to town, and before Eddie started hanging out with a bunch of older boys—the same boys who make it their mission to bully George on a daily basis. But, when Eddie tells his friends about the boathouse, everything starts to go wrong.

Suddenly the cool, magical secret of the boathouse isn’t a secret anymore, and the mysteries of the past come back to haunt them, putting their lives in great danger.

Excerpt:

“I’ll pay you five bucks if you eat one.” Eddie Morgan taunted his little brother as he dangled a writhing worm over his head.

“Leave me alone already, Eddie.” George tried his best not to make eye contact with Eddie or his friends. He knew that it only made things worse when they knew they were irritating him. They lived in a small rural town with little to do on a Sunday afternoon. George tried to pass the time swimming or fishing in the lake at the north end of Brunson. Eddie normally found entertainment by harassing his thirteen-year-old younger brother.

“We’ll leave you alone. As soon as you eat the worm, bird brain,” Eddie continued as his two buddies watched the show.

George sat in silence, refusing to look up. He knew this would be a mild torture session because Jake was not with them. At nineteen, Jake Parnell had four years over the other boys. He was the definition of a classic bully. George thought he hung out with the younger boys because he was a bit slow in the head. Maybe he’d been hit too many times playing football. Whatever it was, Jake didn’t get along too well with kids his own age. The other two minions were Brian Johnson and Tim Oglesby. They seemed to go along for the ride in most situations.

“Fine, if you’re not going to eat it, then beat it, kid.” Eddie took the rod from his hands and plopped down on the dock.

Without containing their laughter, Brian and Tim took a seat next to him, and continued to see who could spit farther into the water.

George grabbed his bag and walked away from the older kids. Deep down, it bothered him they always won all the time, but it just wasn’t worth the fight. They would lose interest and he would be fishing again in an hour. It made him angry to think those boys really believed that two years of life made them that much more mature than he was. Personally, he thought it just made them look like buffoons.

He walked down the dirt path away from the three fifteen-year-olds, looking over his shoulder occasionally to make sure they weren’t following him. When he was sure he was alone, he took off at a slow jog toward the wooded area next to the old Miller place. The house was rumored to be haunted. He knew this is where having friends would come in handy because George had only overheard other kids at school talking about what had happened, so he never really got to hear all the juicy details. From what he’d pieced together, the Miller family had lived here in Brunson for years, before his family moved here. They had a little girl named Emily who was playing outside one day when she just disappeared.

Still standing amongst the ruins is a mind reader who finds herself on the wrong side of the war. Everyone does what they must to survive. That is, until one rebel sneaks past her defences and into her heart. Love will blossom from the ashes, but will it be enough to save them, or will it mean the end of them both?

Author Interview:

1.    What inspired you to write this book?

I love reading dystopian novels so I’ve wanted to write one myself for a while now. As much as I love the worlds and the idea of things being drastically different from what our society is like today, I didn’t want the sole focus of the story to be on the world itself. I wanted it to be more in the background and make the forefront on the characters and how they adapt to the changes. Finding love and hope in a tragic time shows the strength and perseverance of humans despite the obstacles they need to overcome.

2.    What characters do you connect with most?

In Switch, to be honest I’d probably be more like Bridgette, in the sense that I’m the type of person to want to avoid conflict and just keep my head down. I’d definitely be more focused on adapting to the new world and making my way in it, rather than looking to change things. I admire Charlotte the most because of her strength and all that she does to survive, but I know if it were me in the story I wouldn’t be nearly as kick-ass as her lol

3.    What's your favorite book-turned movie?

Out of the recent ones I’d have to say the Hunger Games. Honestly, I thought they did a fantastic job with it and I’m really looking forward to the next. I’m also excited to see City of Bones as a movie. Hopefully they’ll be able to do it justice. I’m still a firm believer that the movie is never as good as the book.

4.    If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?

Probably Logan from the Eden Series, because he’s funny, charming, and extremely loyal. It’s always good to have someone around who can pick you up when you’re down.

5.    Can you tell us about any other books you're writing?

Right now I’m in the middle of editing the last book in my YA Fantasy series, Eden. I have the next New World books to write as well, but I haven’t started them. Each book will focus on one of the boys, who you will meet in Switch. Each boy will have their own love story with the same continuing theme in the background. Roman and Bridgette are next so I’ll start that soon. I also have another YA Fantasy to write that is a spin-off of Eden. Lots to do and never enough time!

6.    What do you do in your spare time?

What spare time? Lol just kidding. Actually I’m not lol With two kids and a million things on my plate I don’t have much time left, but at the end of the night when they’re in bed and I’m beat, I like to sit down and watch an episode of whatever series my husband and I are watching. Right now it’s Breaking Bad, so I like to relax and enjoy a quick episode before bed.

7.    Who's your inspiration?

I don’t think I have one person who inspires me. I get inspired from lots of people, whether it be those close to me or people I read about in the media.

8.    If you were stranded on a desert island which character do you want by your side?

Jericho Barrons from the Fever Series. He’d either find a way to get us off the island, or I’d just be stuck there with him, which is fiiine by me ;)

9.    Team Edward or Jacob?

Edward!

10. Team Peeta or Gale?

Gale!

11. What are you reading now?

I just read Going Under by S. Walden which was fantastic. I’m not actually reading anything at the moment, but I will be starting Joe by H.D. Gordon shortly!

Summary:

Can the ultimate choice be made if saving your race means destroying the one you love?
At the beginning of the twenty-first century of our era a millennia long war between two immortal races was coming to an end. The Vampire Elite, the strongest among vampires, forced the race of immortal beings, the Amiti to become their blood suppliers, called bloodstock, locking them in their underground cells and treating them like livestock. The surviving free Amiti make a final attempt to strike back. The Queen of Amiti is proclaimed a traitor and is executed. Her death signifies the rise of a new Queen, her young daughter Arianna who becomes the last hope of her dying race. Arianna totally embraces her mission and is ready to fight for her people to the last drop of her blood but encounters an unexpected challenge—the vampire King Tor. They both are captured into a trap of love where they had to make an ultimate choice; to kill the loved one or to let their races die.

Vampire Elite is the epic story of a bitter conflict between two peoples, and the effect of that conflict on everyone living in its grip. The characters are driven to love and betrayal, vengeance and sacrifice in a world without easy black-and-white answers.

Based on an ancient Egyptian legend, packed with action and intrigue, Vampire Elite will pull you into the entrancing world of immortals and open new portals into their hidden universe.

Excerpt

As the auctioneer spoke, two Sekhmi in eveningwear—a male carrying an elegant dagger and a female a silver tray covered with glass vials—approached the Amiti girl.

“She’s barely eighteen, ladies and gentlemen. That’s a good three years younger than the youngest bloodstock you’ll usually come across. Look at her; she’s stunning, simply stunning, and as you can see, we’ve kept her well conditioned, in excellent health.”

The auctioneer paused as the male Hunter grasped the Amiti’s hand and held it above the tray. The girl showed no resistance, her only display of anxiety the butterfly fluttering of her thick eyelashes. He raised his other hand, and the dagger flashed in the light as with a swift motion he slit the Amiti’s palm. The dark, intoxicating scent of fresh blood filled the room as it poured into the vials.

Simone’s gums began to itch and burn, and she covered her mouth with her hand so no one would see her fangs punching down. It was considered terribly rude to expose one’s fangs in public, even among other vampires. But she needn’t have worried; everyone’s attention was riveted to the stage and the blood flowing from the girl’s wound. The room vibrated with bloodlust and sexual arousal.

The female Sekhmi approached Simone’s table, offering the Royal Pride the first of the blood samples. Knowing that all eyes were on her, Simone forced herself not to hesitate and took a small sip—and was immediately flooded with euphoria.

“For this magnificent specimen, we open the bidding at ten million U.S. dollars,” announced the auctioneer.

Summary:

We vampires do not make easy prey. Our weaknesses are few, our strengths many. Fear is something we do not know, and death but a distant memory. So tread softly, pray to your god, and gird yourself with silver when the moons arise and night’s dark prince awakens. We fear not the wizard, nor the warrior, neither rogue, nor priest; our strength is timeless, drawn from darkness and we know no master save the hot lust of our unending hunger. We long for blood, your blood and no blade, nor spell, nor clever artifice, can keep us long from our prize. Feel our teeth at your throat, your life ebb from you, and know as darkness comes to claim you that the price of your folly is your everlasting soul.

***

In Drisdak, the city on the Sea of Sorrows, the citizens have much to dread. Unease and foreboding have always been associated with the local wizards guild; peasants have an innate distrust of magic and those who use it. But now, something else is on the rise. A mysterious fire at the guild has left two men dead and a third missing. A small matter, you say? Well, one of those men was the guild master, and his successor wants to know what happened to him. Enter Coragan of Esperia, the renowned bounty hunter. If anyone can unravel this mess he can. But is even he prepared to challenge the horrible evil that lurks at the heart of the mystery? An ancient vampire by the name of Lucian val Drasmyr.

Excerpt:

There’s a woman in chain mail standing across the room from me; her sword is leveled at my chest. I can smell the enchantment on the blade, it’s a strong one; maybe even strong enough to cause me harm. Still, I’m not too concerned; it’s at least a ten foot lunge and I know I move faster than she does. Indeed, she’s the one who is looking worried. My display of strength and the death of her comrade have shaken her resolve.
She’s got a pretty face, flushed with excitement but strong and in control. It is her neck that really draws me, though, so soft and inviting, filled with the warm blood I desire. The curve of her flesh glistens, waiting for a well-placed gentle kiss.

She’s breathing rapidly now, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Her trek up through the castle has sapped much of her strength. And the fear she feels is naked in her eyes. Now, she’s getting ready to pounce, just a little too much tension in her stance, her eyes just a little too focused. She couldn’t give me more warning if she were to ask my permission first.
She moves in with remarkable speed, her blade striking out like a serpent’s tongue. Even winded, she still manages to cut my cape, then prances away with her back toward the wall, ready for anything. Anything, except me.

In a nutshell: Writer. Blogger. Journalist. Marathon runner. Social media enthusiast. Beer drinker. Avid YA reader. Traveler. Chicago native. Milwaukee resident. Music fanatic. Fashion lover. Oldest of nine.

Writing has been in my soul from the very beginning. In grade school I started my own local paper for the street I lived on. In middle school I wrote for the school paper and loved any English writing assignment. I started writing novels in high school. At the time my friends were the characters, the setting was almost always Regency England, and I scratched the story into lined notebooks.

Now, I have a journalism degree and a dozen various business writing gigs under my belt. I’ve lived in a handful of US cities including Milwaukee, Chicago, Boston, St. Louis and New York. I pen a personal fashion and lifestyle blog, ModlyChic.com, and continue to write about commercial real estate.

My first book, Aurora Undefined, was published in 2011. The Emerald Isle, the first Fascination Island book, came out during the summer of 2012, at which time I immediately began writing the second book in the series.

Next up . . . stay tuned! I’m working on a new contemporary novel as well as the third book in the Fascination Island series.

Excerpt:

Jack was leaning against a post, about halfway between the barn and the porch, when he saw Sara come out of the house.

God, she was gorgeous. Every inch of his body stirred as he watched her approach him in a pair of form-fitting black jeans. She had her hair down and wore a long necklace that hung low on her neck, bringing his eyes to the low cut of her shimmery blue blouse.

If that wasn’t enough to make his blood boil, she was wearing a pair of high-heeled black sandals that showed off her sexy red toenails he’d noticed the previous night.

He felt like a teenager going on his first date. He didn’t know what to say. You’re pretty didn’t seem to do justice, but he hated to be the slobbering fool, constantly telling her how beautiful or amazing she looked. Even though she did.

He wished their situation wasn’t so complicated. He was getting ready to make a huge move in his professional life that would take him farther away from her.

How could life be so cruel, to introduce him to such an amazing woman, the kind he could really see himself falling for, just to say that he couldn’t have her?

Or maybe life wasn’t saying he couldn’t have her. Maybe long distance was just temporary. Maybe . . .

About the author:

My husband and I live in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee with our eighteen-year-old son and three dogs. When I’m not working or writing, I can be found with family and friends. I love to bake in the winter, grill in the summer, and on occasion, I sneak away from everyone and curl up with a good book.

I hope you enjoy my stories. Each one touches on modern day issues, fears, and challenges that women face every day. And each one illustrates that love is within reach if you let down those walls and allow your heart to open. Our lives and experiences are so much more meaningful when we have someone to share them with.
